Template:Re

From The Bionic Wiki

The Role-Episode template allows for easy association of a role with an episode. Its principal use will likely be on actor pages, within the infobox that gives a listing of all an actor's roles. It has been abbreviated to re because it will tend to be used frequently, necessitating brevity.

[edit] Main usage

The point of the template is simply to reduce the number of key strokes to associate a role with an episode. While you could type:

[[Role]] in "[[Episode]]"<br/>

to get: Role in "Episode" (with a line break), this template condenses things to:

{{re|Role|Episode}}

resulting in the same: Role in "Episode"

This is arguably not much of a savings when speaking in terms of a single credit, but when building a page with multiple credits, it should reduce the typing burden overall, and reduce the chances of making a formatting error. Note that you don't even need to hit the enter key here:

{{re|Lindsay Wagner|Welcome Home, Jaime}}{{re|Oscar Goldman|Sharks}}{{re|Steve Austin|Run, Steve, Run}}{{re|Rudy Wells|Fly Jaime}}

returns the result:
Lindsay Wagner in "Welcome Home, Jaime"
Oscar Goldman in "Sharks"
Steve Austin in "Run, Steve, Run"
Rudy Wells in "Fly Jaime"

[edit] Episodes with disambiguated names

For cases of episodes which bear an "artificial" name for the purposes of disambiguation — such as The Bionic Woman (episode), this template will accommodate a third, "masking" variable to allow for the inclusion of the "proper" episode title. Thus, you can type:

{{re|Role|Episode (disambig term)|Episode}}

and still get: Role in "Episode"
, directed to Episode (disambig term)

[edit] Limitations

This template is really only appropriate for lists, where an automatic anteceding line break is highly desirable. Its principal usage is intended to be in infoboxes. It would not be useful within a body of text, as it would create an odd text break.

However, there is no leading line break, so if you wanted to incorporate a list in the text of an article, you'd have to manually put one in. A leading line break has been deliberately left out, because it would create a massive amount of space in the infoboxes.
